At the beginning of the season, the Lasalle Vipers played their first away game vs the Elmira Sugar Kings. In their first meeting, the Vipers won 5-2. The Sugar Kings won this one 2-1, thanks to a late second period goal that eventually proved to be the difference.
Elmira set the tone early when they opened the scoring just 3:53 into the game. The Vipers fought to even the score and even had a man advantage at 8:11 when Elmira took their first and only penalty all game. Unfortunately, the powerplay was unsuccessful during those 2 minutes but later at 15:14, Jak Thiessen did deliver the equalizer. Sending us into intermission locked at 1.
Both teams batted hard for control in the second period. The Vipers faced only one penalty at 5:15. Still tied at 1 in the dying seconds of the period, the puck slipped under the pads of Vipers goalie Jake Windbiel. With just 15 seconds remaining, the Sugar Kings took the 2-1 lead.
Heading into the final frame only down by 1, the Vipers fought hard to equalize the game again. Throughout the period, only 1 penalty was called to Kyle Greene. At 18:46, the Vipers attempted to close the gap by pulling Windbiel for the man advantage but were unsuccessfully, falling just 1 goal short.
