The Spitfires got off to a great start Saturday in Flint, they never looked back after an early shorthanded goal turned out to be the game winner.

In the first period, the Spitfires took an early penalty just under 40 seconds into the game but it could have prevented a possible goal. With Ribau in the box for 2 more seconds, captain Cuylle scored shorthanded to give the Spitfires a 1-0 lead. Throughout the period both teams traded chances with the Firebirds coming close to tying it after hitting the post and crossbar twice. The Spitfires lead 11-9 in shots after one period of play.

In the 2nd period, the Spitfires came alive and scored three unanswered goals. Henault sniped his 4th on the season just 38 seconds into the period when he came into the slot and Johnston found him for the open shot. Just under 2 minutes later McDonald also cut into the slot and sniped his 8th on the season with Sobolev and DeAngelis drawing the assists. Just over halfway through the period Maggio buried his 6th on the season banging home a rebound from a McDonald shot, Miedema got the 2nd assist.

In the third period, the Spitfires didn’t stop scoring 2 more goals. Ladd scored his first goal on the season unassisted 7:46 into the third period. Less than a minute later Miedema buried his 5th on his rookie season, assists to McDonald and Zito. With just 45 seconds left Renwick scored his first as a Spitfire to make it 7-0. A huge congratulations to Matt Tovell on his first career OHL start, first career OHL win and first career OHL shutout!
