The LaSalle Vipers dropped Game 2 of their first-round playoff series on Sunday night, falling 2-0 to the Elmira Sugar Kings. The loss gives Elmira a 2-0 lead in the series as the matchup now shifts to LaSalle for Game 3 and 4 at the Vollmer.
Sunday’s contest was even more physical than Game 1, with penalties being handed out early and often. Just three minutes into the game, roughing penalties were already being called as both teams continued to fight for the first goal. Elmira opened the scoring midway through the first period at 9:42. Tensions continued to rise as a surge of penalties was called just seconds after the goal.
The Sugar Kings added to their lead early in the second period, scoring what would stand as the final goal of the game at 1:57. The physical play continued throughout the period, as Lucas Pougnet received a high-sticking penalty and Grady Spicer was called for slashing.
In the third period, the Vipers continued to push for a late comeback. The Vipers pulled goaltender Jake Windbiel with 3:10 remaining, but the extra attacker was not enough to break through Elmira’s shutout. Despite several chances through the game, the Vipers were unable to find the back of the net. LaSalle recorded 50 shots on goal, but the Elmira goaltender held strong.
Game 3 is set for Wednesday night, followed by Game 4 on Saturday.
