Vipers Come Out On Top in Rematch Game vs KW Siskins

The last time the Kitchener-Waterloo Siskins came to the Vollmer Culture R.C, they defeated the Lasalle Vipers 3-2. This time around, the Vipers knew what to expect from the Siskins and prepared accordingly. The Vipers brought this game into an extra frame where eventually Captain Owen Findlay became the overtime hero.

Both teams came out hard in the first period. Neither team could get it pass either goalie. Jake Windbiel started for the Vipers, his fifth start since coming to the team. Backed up by Hunter Welk, who plays for the Lakeshore Canadiens in the PJHL. The only call of the period was a tripping penalty to Viper’s defencemen Brody Jones. Lasalle ended the period with 11 shots on net. KW had 9.

Kyle Greene started the scoring only 1:44 into the second period. Not long after, the Siskins scored their first but after a discussion among the referees the goal was called off. At 8:53, KW scored again, this goal counting. Tied 1-1 going into the next 20 minutes.

We opened the third period on the powerplay, but a bad break caused KW to score shorthanded on that powerplay. Down by one with just over 7 minutes to go, Matteo Vilardi scored the tying goal. The remainder of the period couldn’t resolve the tie, so we entered an extra frame.

4:32 into overtime and the Vipers knew exactly what to do when KW received a tripping penalty. Captain Owen Findlay’s first goal of the season couldn’t have come at a better time. His goal hit the back of the net at 5:22, assists to Nick Graniero and Max Brocklehurst. Vipers win this rematch 3-2.

On Sunday, we travel to Chatham for a 7:00 game vs the Maroons

Next Wednesday, the Maroons travel to Lasalle for a 7:00 puck drop at the Vollmer Culture R.C.
